Course Objectives:

Help develop standards-based, locally significant, integrated STEM units for all teachers (K-12)


Use a broad range of research-based instructional strategies to cultivate hands-on, minds-on STEM skills in students

Assist teachers with developing units for immediate use in classrooms directly in line with OSPI guidelines. 

Use science or computer-science standards as a springboard for all integrated work, the course will offer step-by-step strategies for backward-designed units. 

Offer integration strategies so teachers will leave with expertise in developing STEM activities for learners that have meaningful, locally-relevant careers.

Deidre Holmberg

Deidre focuses on the integrated, standards-based curricular design and full implementation of start-up STEM schools.  An expert in teacher professional development, operations, and integration of STEM disciplines, she is the founding principal of a regional STEM high school partnered with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Washington State University, Columbia Basin College, and three school districts.  Additionally, she assisted in opening the Washington State STEM Education Foundation and worked to facilitate and co-author STEM curriculum with teachers in opening four STEM elementary schools.  She is an experienced high school Advanced Placement science teacher, middle school math teacher, instructional coach, and STEM principal at the elementary and high school levels.  

Deidre has been the recipient of a Paul G. Allen Family Foundation Creative Leadership Award, the Washington State History Day Administrator of the Year Award, a US Navy Blue Angels Key Community Influencer Award, and a Crystal Apple Special Achievement Award.  Deidre has presented repeatedly at national conferences for the Association for the Supervision of Curriculum Development and the National Science Teachers Association.  Deidre’s schools have been given School of Innovation and Lighthouse School Designations by the State of Washington and one has been inducted into the Pacific Science Center’s Hall of Fame.  Deidre was extremely honored to be invited by the Obama administration to the Inaugural White House STEM Leaders Convening in 2015
